St. Johnsbury – Catamount Arts will host a special screening of micro-budget meta-comedy “A Cell Phone Movie,” on Saturday, September 26th, at 6:30pm. Actor/director Will Sterling will host a Q&A discussion following the screening.
A veritable Russian nesting doll of creativity and delusion, “A Cell Phone Movie” was made by struggling unemployed actor Will Sterling and features a struggling unemployed actor making a movie on his cell phone about (you guessed it) a struggling unemployed actor making a movie on his cell phone.
The result is both chaotic and self-aware, blurring the line between reality and fiction as it explores artistic obsession, failing on purpose, and refusing to give up a dream. Nominated for best debut at Raindance, “A Cell Phone Movie” is scrappy, audacious, and surprisingly inspiring.
At first, writes critic Lex Melony, for Flicker, the whole project “feels like a joke. But as it unfolds, something shifts.” What starts as a clever satire on Hollywood dreams becomes instead a moving, bittersweet reflection on friendship, ambition, and the desperate need for connection in the digital age.
Will Sterling is a New York-based director, producer, and actor. “A Cell Phone Movie,” is his debut feature; his second feature “That Friend,” recently premiered at Tribeca. Sterling’s acting credits include “Criminal Minds,” “Pam & Tommy,” “Black-ish,” “American Crime Story,” “This is Us,” Pink Skies Ahead,” and “Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.” His debut novel, Fame by Misdaventure, won the 2024 PenCraft Seasonal Book Award and the National Indie Excellence Award for Fiction.
