Barbara Stanwyck stars as Lily Powers, a young woman who escapes an exploitative life in a Pennsylvania steel town and sets out to make her own way in New York. Using the desires of powerful men to climb the ranks of a bank, Lily pursues wealth and independence in a world where every relationship comes at a price. This bold 1933 Pre-Code drama confronts sex, ambition, and double standards with a frankness that helped make it a flashpoint in Hollywood’s censorship battles before strict enforcement of the Production Code began in 1934.
Curated by Robert Farlice who will host a discussion following the film.
