Catamount Arts is pleased to announce the opening of Prilla Smith Brackett: Fractured Visions II, an exhibition of paintings and prints that was on view in Catamount Art’s Main Gallery from September 16 through October 26, 2015. An artist’s reception was held on Friday, October 2 from 5-7 pm, with a gallery talk by the artist at 6 pm. All were welcome to attend.

About the exhibition: Known for her conceptual approach to landscape, Prilla Smith Brackett celebrates the natural world in complex paintings and prints that reveal the fragility of domestic life. Meditating upon the loss of a family home, she juxtaposes remnants from that home—chairs, chests of drawers, and beds—against the imagined setting of an old growth forest. The artistic rendering of this furniture is sometimes weighty and sometimes transparent, occasionally floating above trees or lying half-buried in soil composed of rotting vegetation. Old growth forests are able to show the entire life cycle of trees, as well as the natural cruelty of strong winds or lighting storms that wreak havoc. A transcendental forest might be a place to seek solace or reflect on the spiritual, but in Brackett’s strange and primordial world, we detect hints of family discord, jarring uncertainty, and hidden secrets that inspire the intentional fragmentation of artistic vision.

About the Artist: Prilla Smith Brackett has exhibited in one-person exhibitions and group shows both nationally and abroad. Honors include a finalist award in painting from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, artist residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts; the Ragdale Foundation; the Ucross Foundation; and a fellowship in painting at the Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College. Born in New Orleans, Brackett graduated from Sarah Lawrence College and the University of California/Berkeley before earning an MFA in drawing & painting from the University of Nebraska/Lincoln. Smith Brackett added printmaking to her practice in 2003, and lives and works in Boston, MA.
