Jacques Tati’s beloved French comedy follows the gentle, pipe smoking Monsieur Hulot as he arrives at a seaside resort and quietly disrupts the routines of vacationers around him. With little dialogue and a brilliant sense of visual rhythm, the film turns ordinary beach holidays, hotel meals, tennis games, boats, dogs, and fireworks into an affectionate ballet of comic mishaps. Released in 1953, it introduced one of cinema’s great comic characters and helped make Tati an international name.

Curated by Alice Wuertele who will host a discussion following the film.
