Colonial Theatre

Envisioning an enlightened and enriched community. Through relevant arts and cultural programming we nurture the heritage, prosperity and aspirations of the communities we serve.

Located in the heart of The White Mountains in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, the historic Colonial Theatre is one of the oldest continuously operated movie theaters in the country. When The Colonial opened its doors in 1915, the era of the Grand Hotels was in full swing and Bethlehem was a premier destination resort. Because of its sophisticated clientele The Colonial quickly became a venue for studios to test market their films. With its rich history The Colonial remains one of the remaining links to the era of the Grand Hotels as well as a significant chapter in the history of the film industry.

Now, after a series of renovations and improvements, the 300-seat Colonial offers state-of-the-art digital projection and surround sound for independent and world cinema, hosts Grammy award-winning performing artists, family entertainment, and community events from May through October—all without losing the intimate charm of a vintage summer theater.

The Colonial Theatre is on NH Registry of Historic Places and was named “Best Vintage Movie Theatre” by Yankee Magazine.

Northeast Kingdom Classical Series

The Northeast Kingdom Classical Series is an independent nonprofit organization that presents four chamber music concerts each season. The Series, founded in 1989 by Judith Rankin and Leslie Gensburg, is run by dedicated volunteers who believe that fine music should be accessible to everyone—and to the delight of music lovers from the region and beyond, they present national and international artists at the highest level of performance while keeping ticket prices affordable.

The Series engages solo artists, duos, piano trios, string quartets, and wind ensembles who are at different stages of their careers—those starting out as well as seasoned masters. The concerts feature chamber music’s most-loved pieces as well as lesser-known works that deserve to be heard, and reflect the wide range of music styles and eras (Baroque, Classical, and Romantic to Modern and Contemporary). During the performances, held at St. Johnsbury Academy’s South Church Hall, the connection between the musicians and the audience is remarkable, as the space has outstanding acoustics and fosters the intimacy that is ideal for chamber music. In 2007, the Series launched a successful fundraising campaign to purchase a Steinway B piano, delighting audiences (and pianists) ever since.

It is our pleasure to continue to present these concerts that give so much enjoyment to our community and that lift our spirits throughout the winter season.
