A Russian nesting doll of creativity and delusion!
Struggling, out of work actor Will Sterling made a feature film entirely on his cell phone about a fictional version of himself, a similarly struggling, out of work actor making a movie on his cell phone about a struggling, out of work actor making a movie on his cell phone.
The result is “A Cell Phone Movie,” a $20k micro-budget meta-comedy that’s just as chaotic as it is self aware. Nominated for best debut at Raindance, it blurs the lines between reality and fiction as it explores artistic obsession, failing on purpose, and refusing to give up on a dream. The screening includes a live introduction by Sterling and a post film talk that’s part stand-up comedy, part motivational shove to inspire you to get out there and make the d*mn thing!
Will Sterling is a New York–based writer, director, producer, and actor. His debut feature, A Cell Phone Movie, earned a Best Debut Feature nomination at Raindance in London and multiple awards, including Best Feature, Audience Choice, and Best Actor in Comedy. His follow-up feature, That Friend, which he co-wrote, co-directed, and co-produced, stars Josh Brener, Billie Lourd, and Harvey Guillén, and recently premiered at Tribeca. His third feature (title still top secret!) is currently in post production.
As an actor, his credits include Criminal Minds, Pam & Tommy, Black-ish, American Crime Story, This Is Us, Pink Skies Ahead, and Everything’s Gonna Be Okay.
His debut novel, Fame by Misadventure, won the 2024 PenCraft Seasonal Book Award and the National Indie Excellence Award for Fiction.
“A Cell Phone Movie is rough, funny, and deeply self-aware. But in the moments where it slows down and stops trying to perform, it becomes something else. A small reminder that making something, anything, is still a way to stay alive. And maybe it is also a reminder to support the people who keep trying, especially when they doubt themselves the most. Because you never know who might grow from someone like Will’s character, someone who, for now, just wants to be seen. A film like this matters. It shows that it’s possible. If gives you belief. It makes you want to start your own journey. Do not wait. Do not be afraid. Better to try than to live with the regret of not trying. Life is full of surprises. You just have to start buying lottery tickets to have a chance at winning.” – Flicker Magazine
