560 Railroad Community Artist Open Studio. jen berger, Catamount Arts’ first 560 Railroad Community Artist, welcomes community members to visit the new studio and learn about her work, which explores the intersections of art and social justice. jen is an interdisciplinary artist who is currently a full-time lecturer in Art and Art History at UVM. In 2019, she founded a business, At the Root, to deepen her community work and support emerging artists. Her background as a community organizer informs her practice of visual and performing art, participatory installation work, community-engaged art practices, and her approach to teaching. Jen brings this creative toolbox to the classroom, to conferences, to the community and to her studio.
jen’s studio practice allows her to make art in which the audience can be in dialogue with the art, the subject(s) of the art, and themselves. Her current work – both creative and scholarly – explores public grieving, especially through monuments and memorials – and she has started working with groups to create altars that honor and respect people, places, and things that have been lost.
