For more than three decades, Jazz at Lincoln Center, under the direction of legendary leader and trumpet virtuoso Wynton Marsalis has been a leading advocate for jazz, culture and arts education globally. This Jazz at Lincoln Center touring initiative celebrates the Great American Songbook in all of its playful — and sophisticated — glory, brought to life by two of this generation’s brightest stars. Each armed with prodigious trumpet talent and vocal charm, Bria Skonberg and Benny Benack III will relive and re-imagine some of the classic partners in jazz and popular song, including Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Bing Crosby, and Dean Martin and Peggy Lee. Featuring songs by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and many more, and joined by a who’s who of New York all-stars, this is an “unforgettable” evening of singin’ and swingin’ with Bria and Benny.
Bria Skonberg:
“Ms. Skonberg has become the shining hope of hot jazz, on the strength of a clarion trumpet style indebted to Louis Armstrong, a smooth purr of a singing voice inspired by Anita O’Day, and the wholesome glow of youth.” – New York Times
“It’s such a groove watching my skol sister follow in the path of Pops, Louis Armstrong, the one who started it all…She even follows his motto, play it don’t say it!!” – Quincy Jones
“A millennial shaking up the jazz world.” – Vanity Fair
“…grittily, soulfully, with a shadowy, mid-career-Lucinda-Williams swagger and growling horn…” – All About Jazz
“I’m a trumpalist! I play vocalet! I’m a hybrid; I’m a swamp monster. An X-man!” – Bria Skonberg
“At 32, trumpeter and singer Benny Benack III has already proven to be a rare talent: not only a fiery trumpet player with a stirring command of the postbop trumpet vernacular in the vein of Kenny Dorham, Freddie Hubbard, and Blue Mitchell, but also a singer with a sly, mature, naturally expressive delivery in the post-Sinatra mold, performing standards and his own astute songs with a thrilling sense of showmanship. His superb intonation and bracing virtuosity enable him to handle astounding feats of originally composed vocalese (complex solos with written lyrics). And he’s a highly capable pianist as well.” – Jazz Coterie
“A trumpeter par excellence, dashing vocalist, and sophisticated writer and arranger, Benny Benack III is truly the genuine article.” – All About Jazz
