This concert is located at Dog Mountain and is dog and family friendly. Feel free to pack your lawn chair or blanket and a picnic (no off-site alcohol permitted). Food vendors will be on-site, and there is a beer garden for alcohol purchases. Cash is recommended, as not all vendors accept credit cards. Austin-based artist Mobley grew up all over the world, from the Spanish Mediterranean to the California coast. Perhaps it’s because of this itinerant childhood that he finds it so hard to sit still. Mobley does it all: he’s a songwriter, producer, visual artist, filmmaker, and a charismatic frontman with a reputation for kinetic live shows. He’s composed dozens of pieces for stage and television (HBO, FOX, NBC, ESPN, CW) and played hundreds of US and international tour dates (with the likes of Phantogram, JUNGLE, Cold War Kids, and James Blake, and at festivals including Lollapalooza, ACL, Voodoo, and Hangout).
With his trademark cinematic sweep, the songsmith (and record producer/filmmaker/writer) has delivered a new EP, Cry Havoc!, that carries forward the themes of power, alienation, and dissent that have animated his work to-date. But where 2021’s Young & Dying in the Occident Supreme refracted these ideas through surreal spaghetti-western soundscapes and guitar-driven psych rock, Cry Havoc! introduces a retro-futuristic world of seductively sinister melodies, distorted synths, jagged cuts, and propulsive rhythms.
What remains unchanged is Mobley’s penchant for pop songwriting — ear-worm melodies and hooks for days. He has a mad scientist’s need to experiment with the form’s limits: for half of the tracks Mobley wrote and recorded whole songs which he then dismantled and sampled to create a fresh, new sound. The result is a record that feels strange and familiar, dangerous and danceable. It evokes the dread curiosity of 70s sci-fi paperbacks. Indeed, they were among the inspirations for Cry Havoc!, which is itself a speculative fiction concept record that takes place in an alternate-past New York and the catastrophic far future that awaits.
The story follows an antihero whose failed heist attempt lands him in a secret time prison, trapped in suspended animation. What’s in store for the protagonist upon release, centuries in the future, is the subject of Mobley’s first full-length album, to come on the heels of this new EP.
