The Vermont Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Lou Kosma, returns to St. Johnsbury at 2 pm Sunday, February 5, with a concert in Fuller Hall on the campus of St. Johnsbury Academy. This exciting Winter concert will feature Essex High School senior Victoria Bergeron, the recent winner of the Vermont Philharmonic Jon Borowicz student scholarship competition, as the featured violin soloist in Mendelssohn's Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. Also on the program is Beethoven's Egmont Overture. And, most importantly, as a measure of the creative abilities of Vermont's premier statewide volunteer orchestra, music director Lou Kosma has added the challenge of Mahler's Symphony Number 1, the Titan Symphony in D Major. This spectacular cultural event, which will make for an even more exciting Super Bowl Sunday, is presented in collaboration with Catamount Arts.
Victoria Bergeron is a senior at Essex High School. She has been a member of the Vermont Youth Orchestra for five years, serving as concertmaster 2010-2012. She participated in tours with the orchestra to Quebec, France, Germany and Prague. She has played in the Vermont All State, All New England, All Eastern and National Honors Orchestras. Victoria participated in the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in 2011. Victoria currently studies violin with Ann Cooper and Stefanie Taylor. Past teachers include Pam Reit, Jill Foley and Julia Ainsworth. She also studies piano with Elizabeth Metcalfe and has been a championship level competitive Irish dancer. Victoria plans to pursue a degree in violin performance. Musical Director Lou Kosma received his degree in music education with applied double bass from Temple University. During the summers of 1967 and 1968, he was a fellowship student at Tanglewood. After teaching for the School District of Philadelphia, he moved to New Jersey and taught in Belleville. From 1976 to 1989, he served as the orchestra and musical show conductor at Holy Family Academy in Bayonne. Mr. Kosma is presently a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. He teaches privately and is an adjunct double bass instructor at New Jersey City University. While freelancing from 1976 to 1986, other affiliations included principal bassist for the American Ballet Theatre, Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and acting principal for the New Jersey Symphony. He was also a member of the Chautauqua Symphony for 17 years. Lou continues to play radio and television jingles and industrials. He has organized and participated in chamber music concerts and recordings with Music Amici and Alborada Latina. Further, he had donated many services for the Chautauqua Hebrew Congregation and the 1987, 1990, and 1993 "Music For Life" concerts at Carnegie Hall to benefit AIDS research. In March of 2002, the Virtu Foundation honored Lou by naming its first double bass scholarship in his name. Lou is Music Director and conductor of the Junior Orchestra of the Youth Orchestras of Essex County and has guest conducted several district, regional and all-state festival concerts in New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, North Dakota and Vermont. Since 1995 he has conducted the adult and intermediate orchestras for the New Jersey Summer String Conference at Rowan University and served as Director of the Adult Division of that conference. He guest conducted the Vermont Philharmonic in 1996 and 1999, and was named Music Director of that orchestra in May of 1999. Lou was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Thurnauer Symphony Orchestra in Tenafly, New Jersey, in May of 2003. In July of 2004 he conducted of the Festival Orchestra at Stokes Forest Music Camp and Festival in Sussex County, NJ. Lou resides in Teaneck, New Jersey. Jon Borowicz, emeritus professor of music at Norwich University, had a dream of bringing together local musicians to perform classical symphonic works. His dream was fulfilled in December 1959, when the Vermont Philharmonic played its first public concert, Handel's Messiah in Plumley Armory in Northfield, Vermont. During the next 30 years, the orchestra performed in a wide variety of settings throughout Vermont. The orchestra found a permanent home in the Barre Opera House when it was reopened in 1993. Professor Borowicz held the baton for nearly 20 years. In 1977, New Zealand native Brian Webb became the orchestra's conductor for the next two decades, stepping down in 1997 to pursue other interests. Dan Bruce served as Interim Music Director during the orchestra's two-year search for a new conductor. The Fall of 1999, Louis A. Kosma stepped up to the podium as Music Director of the Vermont Philharmonic and proudly brought Vermont's oldest community orchestra into the 21st Century. Perhaps the Philharmonic's proudest achievement has been in its support of music in Vermont schools. Many opportunities are offered to students to perform with the orchestra. The Philharmonic annually awards, through audition, a scholarship to an outstanding Vermont high school student of music, who is then the featured soloist in a regular concert. Many scholarship winners have gone on to study music in college and graduate school. Today, the Philharmonic's member-musicians, some 60 strong and from all walks of life, are committed to the orchestra's two-fold mission of sharing their love of music with audiences of all ages, and encouraging young musicians to dedicate themselves to their musical education so that some might become professional musicians of tomorrow.

The struggle for power. The clash of arms. Julius Caesar is the classic story of pride and envy, arrogance and honor, probing the historical events of this iconic roman emperor’s reign with tragic elements and creating one of Shakespeare’s greatest works. Directed by Rob Melrose, artistic director of San Francisco’s Cutting Ball Theater with credits at Guthrie Theater, Magic Theater, and The Public Theater who says this: “During the 80s and 90s, every election was peppered with reports of “voter apathy.” The intense passion that now permeates our politics and threatens to divide our country make this a perfect time to re-examine Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar – a play that looks at what happens when political convictions create conflict and sometimes tragic upheaval.”
“Exploits the small moments as well as the big ones. Slight shifts in tone bolster the wit, while smart timing makes the puns far funnier." – New York Times Both the Acting Company and Guthrie Theater have received Tony Awards for Excellence in Theater. The Comedy of Errors, is Shakespeare’s shortest play and one of his most farcical. A major part of the plays humor derives from slapstick, puns and wordplay. The story of two sets of identical twins accidentally separated at birth involves a series of wild mishaps based on mistaken identities that lead to wrongful attacks, a near-seduction, an arrest, and accusations of infidelity, theft, madness and demonic possession. Shakespeare sets all this action in one day and explores a recurring theme across his work: blending tragic situations with comedic resolutions and slapstick. Directed by Ian Belknap (credits include last year’s Romeo and Juliet, and The Lover and the Poet w/ Kevin Kline and Meryl Streep.

To come to my house, to call for what he likes, to turn me out of my own chair, to insult the family, to order his servants to get drunk, and then to tell me, “This house is mine, sir”. By all that’s impudent it makes me laugh. Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old pal’s son with a view to marriage. But thanks to playboy Lumpkin, he’s mistaken by his prospective son-in-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. The good news is, while Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. And so, as Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms, mayhem ensues. This little barmaid though runs in my head most strangely, and drives out the absurdities of all therest of the family. She’s mine, she must be mine, or I’m greatly mistaken. One of the great, generous-hearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family.
