| This multi-level, on-going dance class teaches polyrhythmic dance styles from several prominent Afro-rooted traditions in Cuba, Haiti, and Brazil.
Movement vocabulary is varied, imaginative, and high in energy. Some dances celebrate the forces of nature, while others feature movements of play, courtship, agriculture or war. No previous dance experience is necessary. Wear leotards, sweat pants or other loose clothing, bare feet,
and women and girls need full skirts.
Penelope Newcomb has over 35 years experience in dancing, choreographing, and teaching adults and children. She is a former member of the Trisha
Brown Dance Company, co-founder and former director of the New American Folkloric Dance Group. Since 1988 she has studied Afro-Caribbean folkloric dance and music in Cuba, Mexico, and the USA. Delightful live drum accompaniment is provided by Ira Friedman and friends. |
