The natural world is my inspiration for making pottery. The Northeast Kingdom of Vermont is awash in color, a multitude of life in every season, and it feeds my creative energy. I watch patterns in the wider universe - the growth of a single seed into a gorgeous bloom, the spiraling of the water in the cold streams and the way it reflects the sun, the helical twining of the bean sprout up, up to the light. It is the making pots - the raw hunk of earthen clay turning in my hands grows before my eyes. The heat of the firing melts rocks into gorgeous, fluid, glass paintings. From nothingness, something comes to be. Clay allows me to intermingle with the forces of nature - earth, water, fire and air - and to make a useful product, which is also a piece of art. My pottery is wheel-thrown from red, stoneware clay and fired in an electric oxidation kiln to just over 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. I handcraft all my glazes and am always developing a wider spectrum of color and tecture in these glass paints. Please visit my website for a listing of galleries and craft shows. Studio hours are by appointment only.

She shifted from free-form molded work in the 1950's to the most remarkable body of modern salt-glazed wares in the 1960's and 1970's. Then she did the same for the wood-fire palette, investing it with a new vibrancy. Today she explores multiple forms and the figure. They are still pots but now they sway and undulate with the litheness of dancers."

We strive to have a small, simple menu that showcases the very best our region and state has to offer. This applies to our food, beer and spirits. Vermont, and especially The Northeast Kingdom, is populated by some incredibly eclectic, diverse and talented people. This is especially true of our farmers, brewers, distillers and cheese makers. Wherever and whenever possible we will showcase their talents and their wares. Much of what you will drink and eat at the Taproom is fresh, local and made in extremely small quantities. We hope that you will appreciate it as much as we do.

    Donated by: Judith Lerner
    Donor Website: www.judithlerner.com
Judith Lerner is a colorist, exploring shapes formed by shadows and light, threading colors on their way from the gaudy to refinement. Her perception of the richly patterned countryside focuses on a continuing investigation of the colors in nature and the seasonal changes, always filtered through imagination and memory. As a landscape painter, her technique in gouache presents broad vistas as well as details, using her immediate environment of the Connecticut River Valley of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and travels. Though best known for landscapes, she also produces paintings of botanicals each summer – a series of lotus dancing, roadside wildflowers, and garden flowers. She has been a printmaker, an art director and designer of record album covers, and a book illustrator. She received her BFA from the University of the Arts, in Philadelphia, and completed graduate work in Classical Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania. Her paintings and prints have been the subject of many solo gallery and group exhibitions in New York, Boston, New England, Washington, D.C., and London; and her paintings have been represented in the U.S. Department of State’s Art in Embassies program. Lerner is represented in public, private and corporate collections including the De Cordova Museum, the First National Bank of Boston (Bank of America), the Philadelphia Print Club (The Print Center), the New Hampshire State House, and the Fletcher Allen Health Care Hospital in Burlington, Vermont. The Seasons, a four panel mural series of Vermont landscapes, was commissioned by the Vermont Council on the Arts, and is installed in the Franklin County Courthouse in St. Albans, Vermont. Lerner moved to Lyme, NH in 1971 and joined the beginnings of AVA Gallery in 1973. Work can be seen in the studio by appointment, on the website, and during Open Studios throughout the Summer and Fall seasons, and as currently represented by Burlington City Arts.

I live and paint in East Burke, Vermont. Located on a ridge, we look to Burke Mountain to the east and to the north is Willoughby Gap, a dramatic profile where a glacial lake formed in the last ice age lies between two mountains. The countryside, the exciting seasonal changes in northeastern Vermont, and our animals all are endlessly energizing and inspiring. I aim to draw accurately, paint freely, and to bring energy, light and rich color into my work. Although the paintings are of places and people, the real subjects are my responses to light and color.

  • North American Nebula Image taken @ NSO

This amazing mosaic of NGC7000, the North America Nebula, was imaged and processed by NKAF President Bill Vinton on August 18, 2013. The North American Nebula (NGC7000) is a very large (roughly 2 degrees - about 4 times the size of the full moon), diffuse, emission nebula that is located in the constellation Cygnus, The Swan. This nebula is found near Deneb, the tail of the Swan, the brightest star in Cygnus, and one of the "Summer Triangle" of stars which also includes Vega and Altair. The red glow of the nebula is the result of a nearby star (perhaps Deneb) that energizes the hydrogen gas, resulting in the re-emission of much of the adsorbed energy at the hydrogen alpha wavelength. This photomosaic consists of nine images of NGC7000 taken on August 18, 2013 with the Northern Skies Observatory 17" PlaneWave CDK reflector using its Apogee Alta U16M CCD camera. Each image is the result of three separate 300 second exposures, one each through Hydrogen Alpha, Oxygen III and Green filters. Each image was processed with ImageJ, with the final mosaic stitched together using the MosaicJ plug-in. One challenge in processing this mosaic was to adjust the brightness, contrast and color mix of each of the nine images so that they closely matched. For this first attempt, I elected to emphasize the Hydrogen alpha channel, which brings out the red nebulosity seen in the image. A Google Images search illustrates a wide variety of other filter and processing possibilities. In this case, my choices somewhat obscure the "North America" shape, but the "Gulf of Mexico," with the "Yucatan Peninsula" sticking up into it, is located just to the left of center. The intriguing features seen to left of the "Gulf" are known as "Cygnus's Wall" and is the most active region of new star formation in the nebula.

Where I live, on the pond in between sky and forest. I walked, rain or shine or snow, often in storms all year round. I hope they'll help us to recognize nature is wonderful and perfect. It was my goal to preserve the beauty of their life.
