Fall 2011 Lecture & Arts Events

Lyndon State College is a cultural center for the Northeast Kingdom. As a key community partner with Catamount Arts, LSC is home to a variety of arts & cultural events. On the LSC campus, you will find The Quimby Gallery, an ongoing lecture and arts series, The Twilight Players theater group, weekly movie screenings, student concerts, and performances from artists such as Neko Case, The Vermont Symphony, and The Second City Comedy Troupe.

Vermont Symphony Orchestra

Thursday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Alexander Twilight Theatre

A colorful program is planned to complement the turning leaves. Honegger’s serene Pastorale d’été will be followed by a world-premiere commission by award-winning composer Robert Paterson. Music Director Jaime Laredo will be featured in Mozart’s humorous, Serenata Notturno. Final selections will be Sibelius’ unearthly waltz Valse Triste, and Haydn’s Symphony No. 53, aptly nicknamed L’Imperiale.

Legacy: Austria’s Influence on American Skiing

Thursday, October 13 at 7 pm

Academic & Student Activity Center, Room 100

FREE and open to the public

Documentary filmmaker Ian Scully will present selections from this three-part documentary that tells the story of pioneering Austrian ski instructors and racers. A combination of poverty, war, and a chance to make it in “The Land of Opportunity” led three generations of Austrians to emigrate to the USA—to teach America how to ski.

The Canadian Healthcare System

McGill University Professor of Political Science Antonia Maioni will speak about the Canadian healthcare system—a highly relevant topic as the U.S. grapples with how to provide affordable healthcare on our side of the border. Dr. Maioni is a frequent media commentator and has published widely on Canadian and comparative politics, with a particular focus on public policy, social policy, and healthcare reform.

Copland, Ives, and Harris: The Musical Voices of 20th Century America

Ventriloquist Michael Harrison

Michael Harrison is an extraordinarily talented ventriloquist, puppeteer and comedian. He has worked alongside acts from The Muppets to Boyz to Men. Michael recently finished as one of the finalists—and received glowing reviews from celebrity judges, David Hasselhoff, Sharon Osborne, and Piers Morgan —on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” 

 

 


Peter Boie “Magic for Non-Believers”

Peter Boie, the self-proclaimed Magician for Non-Believers, is bringing his show to Lyndon State College. With humble beginnings at age eleven when he found a magic book at the library, he now tours the country performing his unique form of “magic for non-believers,” where his humor and mind-tingling magic collide to create an entertaining and unforgettable hour.

Vermont’s legendary political theater troupe presents a piece they call Man = Carrot Circus, based on the revelation that upright man rooted in dirt was created in the image of the upright carrot rooted in dirt.

 

 


Slam Poet George Watsky

George Watsky is a writer and performer who believes in the equal power of tears and laughter. The Los Angeles-based artist aims to cross-pollinate the stage, screen, and stereo with work that speaks to both the humor and frustrations of modern life. George has made strides to bring his poetic sensibilities to the theater world. His one-man show “So Many Levels” has been presented in Boston, San Francisco, Vermont, and at the Hip Hop Theater Festival series “Critical Breaks” in New York City.

 

 


Project Dynamite: Incredible Stunts, Hilarious Comics

Alex and Dave’s unique performances are jam-packed with an unforgettable mix of comedy and stunts. Watch in awe as Alex makes two ping-pong balls dance with just his lips, or as Dave’s precise touch brings a whip a fraction of an inch from Alex’s face. Witness a chain escape, acrobatics, and a twelve-foot chair balance—which all compete for attention with their comedic skills.
